I'm of two minds about the story in Diablo Immortal. On the other hand, it has lots of respect for D2R Items the lore of the franchise and picks up exactly where Diablo II ended and setting the scene for what happens within Diablo III. The game will provide a deeper understanding of the cities and civilizations of Sanctuary as well as long-time fans will appreciate the appearances of characters such as Xul the Necromancer and the King Leoric of Tristram.
However the story is an almost beat-for beat repetition from Diablo II. You'll join a group of woodland rogues. Reassemble a legendary staff on the desert floor, fight off hostile shamans in a swamp and climb a mountain with barbarians -- if you've ever played Diablo II, you've literally experienced all of these before. The new story beats boil down to "find the MacGuffin then destroy your MacGuffin" repeated at least four times. I'm also curious if Blizzard is planning to use the same method to create new areas to the game in the future.
How Diablo Immortal looks and feels depends on whether you're playing the full-release version for Android or iOS, or playing the open beta on PC. (Your save data is synced between both, meaning you don't need to be committing to one or another.)
On mobile, the game is awe-inspiring in its graphics and good performance. However, you'll need pretty powerful phone to run it efficiently. My Pixel 4a was a bit slow. it lurched and slowed at times, and the device ran extremely hot. It's also simply tough to keep track of all the action on such a small screen in particular when you need to concentrate on certain abilities. There is a way to make this easier by playing on the tablet with a Buy D2R items Xbox controller -- but you could as well use a PC.
